Wicked (2024) and its sequel Wicked: For Good (2025) are a two-part cinematic adaptation of the beloved Broadway musical, directed by Jon M. Chu and starring Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba and Ariana Grande as Glinda.
The first film, Wicked: Part One, released in November 2024, explores the origin story of Elphaba, a misunderstood girl with green skin, and her unlikely friendship with the popular Glinda at Shiz University. As they uncover the dark truths behind the Wizard’s regime—particularly the oppression of talking animals—their paths diverge. Elphaba rebels against the system, leading to her transformation into the Wicked Witch of the West, while Glinda embraces her role as the Good Witch. The film ends with Elphaba’s dramatic escape and the iconic “Defying Gravity” sequence, setting up the sequel.
Wicked: For Good, releasing on November 21, 2025, continues the story as Elphaba lives in exile, fighting for justice, while Glinda rises in political stature in Emerald City. Their friendship is tested further with the arrival of Dorothy Gale, whose actions will change Oz forever. The sequel introduces new characters like the Cowardly Lion and features original songs such as “No Place Like Home” and “The Girl in the Bubble.” Director Chu has reworked Act II of the musical to address previous plot holes and deepen emotional arcs, especially around Elphaba’s internal conflict and Glinda’s awakening from privilege.
Together, the two films offer a rich, emotional reimagining of Oz, blending spectacle, music, and political allegory to explore themes of identity, power, and friendship.
